Fertilizers should be used carefully and not mixed together without understanding their chemical properties. For example, farmyard manure should never be combined with alkaline fertilizers like wood ash, lime nitrogen, or calcium magnesium phosphate. This is because human and animal urine contains a lot of nitrogen, and when mixed with strong alkaline substances, it can neutralize the nitrogen, making it ineffective for plant growth.
Similarly, superphosphate should not be mixed with alkaline materials such as grass ash or lime nitrogen, as this can reduce the availability of phosphorus to plants. Insoluble phosphate fertilizers like rock phosphate or bone meal also shouldn’t be combined with alkaline substances, as they become even harder to dissolve, preventing crops from absorbing them properly.
Alkaline fertilizers, such as calcium magnesium phosphate, should not be mixed with ammonium-based nitrogen fertilizers like ammonium bicarbonate, ammonium sulfate, or ammonium chloride. When combined, these substances can increase ammonia volatility, leading to a loss of nitrogen and reduced fertilizer efficiency.
Uncomposted farmyard manure should also not be mixed with ammonium nitrate. Unripe manure needs time to decompose before it can be beneficial to plants. If mixed with ammonium nitrate, the manure may lose nitrogen during decomposition, which reduces its effectiveness and causes both materials to be wasted.
Lastly, chemical fertilizers should not be mixed with bacterial fertilizers, such as those containing rhizobia. Chemical fertilizers are often corrosive, volatile, and moisture-absorbent, which can harm or kill the beneficial bacteria in microbial fertilizers, rendering them ineffective. Always follow proper mixing guidelines to ensure optimal nutrient uptake by plants.
