According to recent updates from the Department of Commerce in Hunan Province, two U.S. companies—SLG Carbon and Superior Graphite Corporation—have submitted a petition to the U.S. Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission (ITC) requesting an anti-dumping investigation into graphite electrodes imported from China. This case involves 31 Chinese companies and is valued at approximately $35 million. The investigation focuses on small-diameter graphite electrodes with a diameter of 400 mm or less. All Chinese manufacturers that exported such products to the U.S. during the investigation period are included in the case. Notably, Tongxiang Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd., based in Hunan, exported goods worth $1.4 million to the U.S. in 2006 and has been identified as one of the involved companies. Under U.S. anti-dumping procedures, affected companies must respond promptly to questionnaires issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the ITC. Failure to do so may result in losing access to the U.S. market and significant financial losses. After the initial application is filed, the U.S. Department of Commerce will assess whether the case meets the necessary criteria, with results expected within three weeks. In response to this development, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Mechanical and Electrical Products is set to hold discussions in the coming days to coordinate a unified response and support affected enterprises. This case highlights the ongoing challenges Chinese exporters face in navigating U.S. trade regulations and the importance of timely and strategic responses to safeguard market access.
