In 2008, Foton Aoling, China's largest self-owned brand light truck production base, reached a milestone by producing 300,000 units annually in Zhucheng, Shandong. This facility is not only the largest in China but also one of the most advanced in the world. The production line at this new base is fully aligned with those of global truck manufacturers, ensuring that Aoling’s technical equipment and product quality match international standards. Industry experts have noted that Aoling light trucks already outperform Japanese models in certain aspects. With the integration of Foton Cummins engines, these trucks are set to be exported to developed markets such as Japan, South Korea, and Europe, positioning Aoling as a true "world light truck" factory.
The completion of the 300,000-unit production base marked a major achievement for Foton Motor. In February 2008, a ceremony was held in Zhucheng to celebrate the base’s completion and the reaching of 1.5 million vehicles produced at the plant. Government officials from Shandong Province, Weifang City, and Zhucheng attended the event. As a red Aoling light truck rolled off the production line, it symbolized the company's growing success. The facility now stands as the largest self-owned light truck production base in China, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including advanced welding, assembly, electrophoretic coating, and vehicle testing lines.
Covering 870,000 square meters, the Zhucheng plant employs over 7,000 workers and is a key manufacturing hub for Foton Motor. The company invests heavily in R&D, allocating more than 3.5% of its revenue to innovation. A specific project focused on Aoling light trucks received 370 million yuan in investment. By adopting Toyota TPS production methods and integrating Isuzu technology, Aoling has overcome high-end truck technical barriers, achieving a breakthrough in performance and quality. Collaborations with Mercedes-Benz and European engineering have further enhanced the MRT series, featuring turbocharged diesel engines that boost both power and fuel efficiency.
With the completion of the 300,000-unit production base, Aoling now possesses one of the best light truck production lines in China, bringing its technology up to par with European standards. This expansion significantly boosts production capacity, creating cost and quality advantages that strengthen Aoling’s core competitiveness and elevate its position in the industry.
Previously, no Chinese automaker had dominated the high-, medium-, and low-end light truck markets simultaneously. While Foton Motor was known as the "light truck king," its strength was mainly in economical models. However, the introduction of Aoling changed this dynamic. Before Aoling entered the market, Jiangling and Qingling dominated the high-end segment. But by 2008, Aoling's sales surpassed 10,000 units, capturing nearly 20% of the market. Through targeted innovation, Aoling upgraded its Isuzu platform using European technology, making its trucks more powerful, efficient, and reliable.
In 2007, Aoling achieved record monthly sales of over 3,000 units, consistently hitting high levels. After launching Euro III-compliant models, it gained even more momentum, surpassing competitors and establishing itself as a leader in the high-end market. This success laid the foundation for Foton Motor's "Light Truck Dynasty."
Foton Motor has also expanded globally, exporting to 48 countries and regions. In 2007, it exported over 30,000 commercial vehicles, ranking first in the sector for four consecutive years. The company has established CKD factories in Pakistan, Ukraine, Vietnam, and is negotiating with several other countries. The joint venture with Cummins Inc., Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., produces Euro IV and V compliant engines, giving Foton products a competitive edge in developed markets.
Soon, Aoling light trucks powered by Cummins engines will enter Japan, South Korea, and Europe. These engines offer greater torque, reliability, and lower maintenance costs. Experts believe that the combination of Euro IV-compliant engines and advanced technology will help Aoling dominate both domestic and international markets. With strong preparation and a clear global vision, Foton Motor is steadily moving toward its goal of becoming a global automotive leader.
