Recently, the acceptance meeting for the Shanghai Municipal Science and Education Xingguo major science and technology project — the development of the nuclear secondary pump for a million-kilowatt pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant — was successfully concluded. The nuclear secondary pump, designed and developed by the Shanghai Electric Power Construction and Finishing Factory, passed rigorous evaluation by the Shanghai Nuclear Power Office and an expert panel. This achievement marked a significant step forward in increasing the localization rate of nuclear power equipment to 70%, contributing greatly to China’s nuclear energy self-reliance. As a critical component in large-scale nuclear power units, the nuclear secondary pump was once a technological gap that needed to be addressed in China’s drive toward nuclear independence. During the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period, the Shanghai municipal government launched a key industrial science and technology project titled "Development of Major Equipment and Materials for Million-Kilowatt PWR Nuclear Power Plants." With over 50 years of experience in pump design and manufacturing, the Shanghai Electric Power Construction Plant took on this historically important project, aiming to bridge the technological gap and support domestic nuclear infrastructure. The journey began as early as 1998, when the former Ministry of Power and the Shanghai Nuclear Power Office guided the plant in developing nuclear power products. In 2002, the factory obtained its pump and valve design and manufacturing license from the State Administration of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defense. It has since participated in key projects such as the National Test Fast Reactor, Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, and Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plant. Additionally, it secured a contract for the main island water supply pump of the Pakistan C2 project. Since September 2003, under the guidance of the Municipal Nuclear Power Office, the plant mobilized a strong team to tackle the challenge. They initiated market research, program formulation, and technical demonstrations for the nuclear secondary pump. After years of dedicated effort, the factory successfully completed the development of key models, including hydraulic model design, pressure body, and pump shaft. Drawing on its extensive experience in the power, petroleum, chemical, and metallurgical industries, the plant laid a solid foundation for the localization of nuclear second- and third-stage pump systems, further strengthening China's nuclear industry capabilities.
