Recently, the acceptance meeting for the Shanghai Municipal Science and Education Xingguo major science and technology project — the development of the million-kilowatt pressurized water reactor nuclear secondary pump — concluded successfully. The nuclear secondary pump, designed and developed by the Shanghai Electric Power Construction and Finishing Factory, passed the rigorous evaluation by the Shanghai Nuclear Power Office and a panel of nuclear power experts. This achievement marked a significant step forward in boosting the localization rate of nuclear power equipment to 70%, demonstrating China's growing self-reliance in the nuclear energy sector.
As a critical component in large-scale nuclear power units, the nuclear secondary pump was a key technological gap that needed to be addressed in China’s journey toward nuclear autonomy. During the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period, the Shanghai municipal government launched a major industrial science and technology initiative titled "Development of Major Equipment and Materials for Million-Kilowatt PWR Nuclear Power Plants." With over 50 years of experience in pump design and manufacturing, the Shanghai Electric Power Construction Plant took on this historically significant project, aiming to fill the technological gap and support domestic nuclear infrastructure.
The plant had already been involved in nuclear-related projects as early as 1998, when the former Ministry of Power and the Shanghai Nuclear Power Office guided its initial efforts in developing nuclear power products. In 2002, it obtained the license from the State Administration of Work Safety to design and manufacture pumps and valves. It has since participated in several national projects, including the National Test Fast Reactor, Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, and Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plant. Additionally, the company secured a contract for the main island water supply pump in the Pakistan C2 project.
Starting in September 2003, under the guidance of the Shanghai Nuclear Power Office, the factory mobilized a dedicated team to tackle the challenges of nuclear secondary pump development. This included conducting market research, formulating technical plans, and carrying out detailed feasibility studies. After years of dedicated effort, the factory successfully completed the development of key models, such as hydraulic design, pressure vessel, and pump shaft, by integrating advanced foreign technologies with its own capabilities.
Leveraging its extensive experience in the power, petroleum, chemical, and metallurgical industries, the factory built a solid foundation for the localization of nuclear second- and third-stage pump systems. This milestone not only strengthens China's nuclear equipment industry but also reinforces its long-term strategic goals in energy security and technological independence.
