From September 20th to 22nd, a key seminar on the protection and promotion of patented technologies in the Chinese phosphorus and compound fertilizer industry was held. Organized by *Agricultural Resources Daily* and sponsored by Shenzhen Baotian Ecological Engineering Co., Ltd., with support from Hebei Jinglong Fengli Chemical Co., Ltd., the event brought together industry leaders, experts, and professionals to address critical challenges in intellectual property development.
In recent years, the issue of intellectual property restrictions has become increasingly prominent in the phosphate and compound fertilizer sector. Many key production processes are not being utilized in compliance with regulations, while instances of unfair competition and patent infringement have raised concerns. The primary goal of the seminar was to enhance awareness of patent protection, encourage the safeguarding of innovative technologies, and promote their broader application across the industry.
Yang Ming, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry at the State Intellectual Property Office, highlighted that China still lags behind many developed nations in terms of intellectual property awareness. With over 7.3 million enterprises in the country, most lack even a single patent, and 60% do not own trademarks. In the fertilizer sector alone, there are approximately 6,000 companies online, yet only around 300 patent applications are filed annually.
Zhang Yongzhi, Vice Chairman of the China Phosphate Compound Fertilizer Industry Association, noted that over the past two decades, the industry has made significant strides in technological innovation. Companies like Shenzhen Baotian have demonstrated strong patent awareness, filing as many as 24 patents—making it one of the top contributors in the sector. However, many innovators have suffered due to insufficient understanding of patent protection. Strengthening IP awareness is essential not only for protecting individual company interests but also for fostering a fair and sustainable industry environment.
During the event, experts, scholars, and industry representatives engaged in detailed discussions on various topics, including resource management, anti-compaction technology, high-tower granulation, and low-concentration raw material compounding. They also explored ways to improve intellectual property protection, facilitate the transfer of patents, and encourage independent innovation within the sector. The seminar underscored the importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing in driving the future of China’s phosphate and compound fertilizer industry forward.
