Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

A brave K9 officer from Kenosha, who has been hailed as a hero, was celebrated by a large crowd this Sunday after being shot during a confrontation with a Chicago murder suspect last week.

The German Shepherd, K9 Riggs, was injured when he tackled a suspect who is accused of killing two people in Chicago on Thursday. Despite the gunshot wound to his head, Riggs miraculously survived and is now recovering.

A special procession was held from the animal hospital in Buffalo Grove, where Riggs was receiving treatment, and he was warmly welcomed back to Clausen Park by local residents, police officers, and other K9 units.

The incident began earlier in the week when a 25-year-old man was fatally shot at a bus stop in the Hermosa neighborhood. Shortly after, the same suspect allegedly shot and killed 41-year-old Miguel Padilla Junior during a struggle. The suspect then stole Padilla’s car and fled the scene.

Chicago police alerted Kenosha County deputies that the suspect was driving the stolen vehicle and had been spotted at a gas station in Bristol. When the deputies confronted him, the suspect ran off with a gun. Riggs quickly pursued and tackled the suspect near the highway. In the struggle, the suspect shot Riggs once in the forehead. However, Riggs managed to hold the suspect down until backup arrived. Two deputies then fired on the suspect, hitting him in the abdomen and leg.

Riggs, who has served with the Kenosha Police Department for five years, is expected to make a full recovery. His bravery has inspired many, and the community came together to honor his sacrifice and dedication to duty.
