The brave dog was injured while confronting a suspect in a Chicago murder case. Riggs was shot in the head during a tense encounter with a man who is accused of killing two people in Chicago on Thursday. Despite the serious injury, the five-year-old K9 made a miraculous recovery and is now on the road to healing. A special procession took place from the animal hospital in Buffalo Grove, where Riggs was recovering, and he was welcomed back with heartfelt support from local residents, fellow officers, and other K9 units at Clausen Park. The incident began when a 25-year-old man was fatally shot at a bus stop in the Hermosa neighborhood. Shortly after, the same suspect allegedly killed 41-year-old Miguel Padilla Junior during a struggle. According to authorities, the suspect then stole Padilla’s car and fled the scene. Chicago police alerted Kenosha County deputies about the suspect driving the stolen vehicle. When the suspect was spotted at a gas station in Bristol, deputies attempted to confront him. He ran away while holding a gun, prompting Riggs to chase him down. As the suspect approached a nearby highway, Riggs tackled him, but the suspect shot the dog once in the forehead. Riggs, who has served with the department for five years, is expected to make a full recovery. Two deputies then opened fire, hitting the suspect in the abdomen and leg, bringing the dangerous situation to an end.
