The Northwest Herald recently published an article detailing a fire that broke out in downtown McHenry on Thursday night. According to the McHenry Township Fire Protection District, the blaze started when heavy winds from the season's first winter storm knocked down power lines, sparking a fire at a sports bar and residence. Fire Battalion Chief Mike Majercik shared details of the incident, stating that crews were called to Windy City Wings, located at 1266 N. Green St., around 9 p.m. upon reports of flames. Upon arrival, firefighters found sparks and flames coming from an arched utility pole and downed wires that had fallen onto the front of the building. “It was like a fireworks show,” Majercik said. “As ComEd worked to shut off the power, the fire spread into the building. The high winds made it extremely difficult to bring the fire under control.” Despite the intense conditions, crews focused on protecting the adjacent business, which they successfully saved. However, the bar and grill itself was completely destroyed by the fire. Jeff Rudolph, a local photographer, shared some images from the scene, noting that the fire was classified as a third alarm with a special call. He described the two-story corner establishment as a complete loss, with the fire originating from a downed power line on the rear wall of the building.
