Recently, a groundbreaking technology for dredging ports and berths has been officially launched at Tianjin Port. This innovative method allows for the removal of sediment without disrupting ship loading and unloading activities, marking a significant advancement in port operations. According to officials, this is the first of its kind in the country, setting a new standard for efficiency and safety.
On August 30th, the "New Nansha," a large container vessel, was operating at berth No. 28, Sigangchi, Tianjin Port. Outside the ship, four modified barges were positioned side by side. Two of these vessels were actively suctioning sludge from the harbor and berth bottom, transferring it to the other two barges. This marked the official debut of the newly developed "pick-up dredging" technology, created by engineers at Tianjin Port.
Compared to traditional methods like cutter suction dredgers or chain bucket dredgers, this new process offers greater flexibility, especially in confined spaces such as the front of berths and harbor basins. The system can fill a 1000-ton barge in just 40 minutes, significantly improving operational efficiency.
Ding Naiqing, director of the Tianjin Port Facilities Management Center, explained that the technology has three key advantages. First, it operates through suction, making it ideal for areas where grab boats or cutter suction dredgers struggle. Second, when large ships are docked, the dredger can work outside the berth, ensuring no disruption to ongoing operations. Finally, it can easily handle shallow areas in the harbor, which would be inefficient or impractical for larger dredgers.
Currently, this technology is being implemented across the northern berths of Tianjin Port, as well as in the Dongjiang Port area and the harbor basin. Officials say the port is continuously refining the system, with plans to double its efficiency. The goal is to achieve 1000 tons of dredging in just 20 minutes, further enhancing productivity and environmental sustainability in port operations.
