Lake Forest firefighters responded to a fire at 81 W. North Avenue on Thursday morning, February 23, 2017, after reports of smoke in the basement of a home that was under renovation. Upon arrival, thick black smoke was visible, prompting the alarm to be upgraded to a Code 4 due to the working fire.
As conditions worsened and parts of the first floor became unstable, the incident escalated further, leading to a Box Alarm being called. Firefighters worked quickly to bring the flames under control, and shortly after, the incident commander began to release responding units.
The scene was chaotic, with multiple fire departments mobilizing to assist. The fire caused significant damage to the structure, but no injuries were reported. Local photographers captured the aftermath, showing the extent of the destruction and the efforts of emergency responders.

Steve Redick, a local photographer, shared his experience from the scene: "I happened to be in the area, which is quite far from my usual beat. The fire was already well underway, but I got to see and photograph several fire trucks that I rarely encounter."
Among the vehicles seen at the scene were units from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Lake Bluff, Countryside, Deerfield-Bannockburn, and Highland Park fire departments. Special attention was drawn to a unique bulldog mascot on one of the trucks, adding a memorable touch to the otherwise serious event.
Photos of the fire engines, ladder trucks, and emergency personnel were taken by Steve Redick, offering a rare glimpse into the coordinated response of multiple fire departments during a major incident.
