Instead of making EVs park by a charger, this charger can come to the EV.

The transition to electric vehicles is gaining momentum, but there are still hurdles to overcome. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of sufficient charging infrastructure. While some homeowners can easily install a charger in their garage or carport, it’s much more complicated for apartment complexes, commercial buildings, and other multi-unit spaces. Permits can be hard to get, and upgrading electrical systems for high-power DC fast chargers often takes time and money.

That’s where Ziggy comes in. Developed by EV Charge Safe, this mobile EV charger flips the traditional model on its head. Instead of drivers needing to find a charging station, Ziggy moves to them—bringing power directly to the vehicle. It's a flexible solution that could help bridge the gap while permanent infrastructure is being built or approved.

“We heard from customers who wanted a charger with power on board,” said Caradoc Ehrenhalt, CEO of EV Charge Safe. “We’re the first to offer a full-level two and DC fast charger rental option.” The company already rents out stationary chargers for events like car launches or test drives, and now they're expanding into mobility with Ziggy.

Hotels, airports, shopping centers, and even urban areas are among the potential users. Ziggy can be deployed in geofenced zones, offering charging to cars, scooters, and bikes. Its first major test will take place this summer at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, as part of a series of demonstrations running from May to August.

Although it's not yet in full-time service, the project is a promising step toward more flexible and accessible EV charging. And while the team has considered the risk of vandalism, they believe the security features—including cameras, GPS tracking, and access control—will help keep things safe.

If you're planning to park an EV at DFW this summer, you might have the chance to try out Ziggy during one of the demo sessions. It’s an exciting glimpse into the future of electric vehicle charging—one that’s moving closer to reality every day.

Ziggy does Dallas

Ziggy is a compact, mobile unit equipped with a battery and internal power electronics, along with exterior screens that display ads—similar to static chargers from companies like Volta. After being charged, either on-site or off-site, it can move within a defined area to reach parked vehicles. This makes it ideal for places without existing charging infrastructure, such as remote lots or underdeveloped urban areas.

It's designed for commercial environments like airports, malls, office parks, and hotels, and can also serve as a versatile solution for charging bicycles and e-scooters. The system is initially configured for level 2 (AC) charging, with plans to add level 3 DC fast charging in the future.

EV Charge Safe has taken measures to prevent vandalism, including heavy construction, real-time monitoring, and GPS tracking. While the idea of damaging a high-voltage charger may seem tempting to some, the company believes these safeguards will minimize risks.

Ziggy won’t be in full operation at DFW just yet, but it will participate in several demonstration projects throughout the airport this summer. If you're planning to park your EV there, you can sign up online to experience this innovative charging solution firsthand.
