The Wheeling Fire Department was called to a shed fire on Friday evening along Hintz Road near the railroad tracks. Units from Station 23 responded and were directed to an asphalt contractor’s yard, located just east of the MABAS Readiness Center, where a fire had broken out. Firefighters quickly arrived on scene and began assessing the situation. Two images captured by Larry Shapiro show the early stages of the incident. One image features Wheeling Engine 23 supplying tank water to firefighters as they waited for a supply line to be charged. Another shows an additional attack line being stretched into position. Engine 23 discovered the fire in the yard next to a shed, which had spread to a stack of wood pallets and was threatening a nearby truck containing a tank filled with tar. To manage the risk, Squad 24 was dispatched with a pump-and-roll unit to assist with a quick attack. Meanwhile, Engine 24 laid several hundred feet of LDH hose to connect to a hydrant on an adjacent property, ensuring a steady water supply. Another photo shows Wheeling Squad 24 using a remote-controlled bumper turret to keep the flames away from the tar tank. The fire was located in a tight area surrounded by hazards, making it a challenging response. Several engines had multiple lines operating as crews worked to contain the blaze. Firefighters managed to hold the fire at bay and keep the tank cool until the water supply was fully established. A final image shows Engine 24 laying the long hose to provide water to the firefighting units. The hydrant was located outside the MABAS Readiness Center, which used to be the home of the Wheeling Public Works Department. A video of the incident is available below, offering a visual look at the operation. For more photos, you can view the full gallery [here].
