Lake Forest firefighters responded to a fire at 81 W. North Avenue on Thursday morning (February 23, 2017), after reports of smoke coming from the basement of a home that was undergoing renovations. Upon arrival, thick black smoke was visible, prompting the alarm to be upgraded to a Code 4 due to the active fire.
As the situation worsened and parts of the first floor became unstable, the incident escalated further, leading to a Box Alarm being called in. Firefighters worked quickly to bring the blaze under control, and shortly after, the incident commander began coordinating the release of crews.
The fire caused significant damage to the structure, with visible signs of destruction evident in the aftermath. Several photos captured the scene, showing the extent of the damage and the emergency vehicles that arrived to assist.

Steve Redick, a local photographer, shared his experience: "I happened to be in the area, which is quite far from my usual beat. The fire was already well underway, but I got to see and photograph several fire trucks that I don’t usually encounter."
Among the units seen at the scene were the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD Truck 51, Lake Bluff FD fire engine, Countryside FPD tower ladder, Deerfield-Bannockburn FPD Squad 19, Lake Forest FD fire engine, a fire truck with a bulldog mascot, and others from Knollwood and Highland Park FD. These images provide a rare look at the variety of emergency response units involved in the operation.
