He 50A is an early three-line cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) line developed from the Hejiashan original plantation in Hunan Province. This CMS line is known for its stable fertility, good flowering characteristics, high outcrossing rate, and strong recovery ability. It was officially approved in Hunan Province in 2006. Since 2004, the author has been working on the purification and small-scale testing of this line, which has led to a total of 100 mu of cultivated land with an average yield of 153.9 kg per mu. Over four consecutive years of research, the key features of He-50A and the techniques for high-quality, high-yield, and reproductive management have been gradually understood.
1. Main Characteristics
1.1 Morphological Features
The plant height is approximately 70 cm, with 13 to 15 leaves on the main stem. The stems are thick and the plant has a moderate degree of elasticity. The leaves are upright, with strong tillering ability and a high spike rate. The ears are large, with up to 150 grains per ear, and each grain weighs about 26.5 grams.
1.2 Fertility Characteristics
He 50A is classified as a mid-maturity type, and it shows little sensitivity to temperature. The growth period is relatively stable regardless of sowing season. In northern Hunan, when sown in early April, the main stem develops around 13 leaves, and the growth period lasts 69 to 71 days. For summer sowing in late June, the number of main stem leaves is between 13.6 and 14.1, with a growth period of 66 to 68 days. In Nanning, Guangxi, sown in mid-July, the main stem has 13.5 to 13.9 leaves, and the growth period is 66 to 68 days. In Hainan, sown in mid-January, the main stem has about 14 leaves, and the growth period ranges from 71 to 72 days.
1.3 Flowering Habits
He 50A exhibits uniform heading, with flowering beginning on the second day after heading and peaking on the third day. The flowering is concentrated, and the main bloom occurs in the afternoon. The flowering time is typically between 10:30 and 11:30 AM. The stigma is purple, thick, and resilient, maintaining its viability for 5 to 6 days. The stigma exsertion rate is high, averaging 79%, with 58.5% showing bilateral exposure.
