A harsh Canadian winter is the perfect time to put your diesel truck through its paces. However, its performance largely depends on how well you prepare it for the cold season.
In our previous article, we covered the essential steps to take before winter hits. Now, let’s go over some often-overlooked preparations that even new truck owners should pay attention to. Whether you're driving a brand-new model or a seasoned workhorse, these tips are crucial for keeping your diesel engine running smoothly all season long.

*Glow plugs can take anywhere from 1-15 seconds or more to warm up sufficiently. The amount of time depends on a variety of factors like outside temperature, engine temperature, and lifespan.*
### 1. Test Glow Plugs
If your truck is equipped with glow plugs, make sure they’re working properly before temperatures drop below freezing. Faulty glow plugs can cause diesel to leak into the exhaust, make starting the vehicle difficult, and reduce engine power.
Even if the truck still runs with one faulty plug, it can place extra strain on the engine and lead to unexpected breakdowns. It’s best to check them early to avoid trouble when the cold sets in.

*Winter windshield washer fluid can be the difference between stopping in time and an accident in poor weather conditions.*
### 2. Use Winter Windshield Washer Fluid
If you’ve been using regular windshield washer fluid during the summer, it will freeze when the temperatures drop. Before winter arrives, drain the old fluid and replace it with a winter blend. Look for a product rated for at least -40°C or -50°C.
**Important:** Don’t just top off the old fluid with winter fluid. The system draws from the bottom of the tank, so if the old fluid freezes there, the new fluid won’t help. Always fully replace it.

*JD Diagnostics & Diesel Repair ASE certified technicians are quick and efficient with diesel truck oil changes. Additionally, as certified mechanics, they are more likely to uncover potential issues.*
### 3. Clean or Replace Fuel Filter
A clogged fuel filter can cause a range of issues, from rough acceleration to complete failure to start. Make sure your fuel filter is clean and free of debris. If it's been a while since your last replacement, consider changing it now. Most diesel trucks require a fuel filter replacement every 80,000 to 100,000 kilometers.

*Block heaters can help extend the life of your diesel truck.*
### 4. Test the Block Heater
Many diesel truck owners forget about the block heater, not realizing how important it is. Check if your vehicle has one and test it before winter begins.
Use a multimeter set to ohms. A reading between 9 and 25 ohms means the block heater is in good condition. If it reads lower than 9, there may be an issue that needs fixing.

*Okay, maybe that’s a little extreme — but you get the idea.*
### 5. Fix Windshield Damage
Even the smallest crack in your windshield can become a major problem during winter. Sudden temperature changes can cause small chips to expand into large cracks. Inspect your windshield regularly and repair any damage before it gets worse.
Preparing your diesel truck for winter doesn’t have to be complicated. By checking these key components and making necessary repairs, you can ensure your vehicle is ready to handle the toughest conditions. For more information on winterizing your diesel truck, reach out to us today.
