The Chinese mainland's massive automotive market has drawn the attention of major global automakers, including Yulon Group, Taiwan's leading automobile manufacturer. Recently, it was reported that Yulon plans to significantly boost its investments in the mainland market, with a focus on expanding into car rental services in Shanghai next year. The company also intends to enter the auto financing sector, with an initial investment of approximately 48 million yuan.
This strategic move reflects Yulon’s broader vision of building a comprehensive automotive operations group in the mainland, covering manufacturing, new vehicle sales, car rentals, property insurance, and financial services. The car rental initiative is initially aimed at expatriate and Taiwanese business professionals, who are expected to be key users of the service.
To support this expansion, Yulon’s two affiliated companies responsible for leasing and financing have decided to establish a joint venture in Shanghai, with a total capital of $5 million. Yurong will hold 60% of the shares, while the other partner will own 40%. The necessary documentation has already been submitted to the relevant authorities, and if approved, the first Yulon leasing company in the mainland is expected to officially open early next year.
Yulon has already made significant inroads into the mainland market. Since 2001, the company has partnered with Dongfeng Motor to establish Dongfeng Yulon Marketing Co., Ltd., which handles the sales of Dongfeng trucks. In 2004, Yulon further expanded by setting up the Dongfeng Yulong Middle-Wheeler Replacement Company in Shenzhen. Additionally, Yulon is exploring opportunities to produce and sell its own brand vehicles on the mainland, with Dongfeng Motor likely to be a key partner.
In recent years, several Taiwanese auto companies have shown increasing interest in investing in the mainland. For example, Hetai Automobile recently applied to set up a leasing company in Shanghai, aiming to launch Toyota and Lexus car rental services in the region next year. Meanwhile, Sanyang Industry has partnered with Xiamen Jinlong United Motors to produce 11 or fewer light buses next year. Recently, the board of Xiamen Jinlong United Motors finalized a capital increase of 25 million yuan to support this expansion.
