May 17, 2023 – Flyability, an industry leader in indoor drone solutions, has partnered with Mirion Technologies (NYSE: MIR), a global provider of radiation detection and monitoring systems, to launch a new radiation surveying payload for the Elios 3 drone. This groundbreaking integration brings the Mirion RDS-32™ radiation survey meter onto the Elios 3, transforming it into the first commercially available indoor drone capable of performing remote radiation surveys. The combination of the RDS-32 with the Elios 3’s LiDAR technology allows users to create detailed 3D maps while simultaneously collecting radiological data, enabling precise localization of radiation sources within complex environments. The new feature allows nuclear professionals to gather critical data from hazardous areas without entering them, significantly improving safety. This is especially important in nuclear facilities where exposure risks are high, and manual inspections can be both dangerous and time-consuming. "This partnership between two industry leaders marks a major milestone in our mission to enhance safety through robotics," said Patrick Thévoz, CEO of Flyability. "Field testing at multiple nuclear sites has shown that this solution will make a real difference in how we approach radiation monitoring and inspection." The integration also introduces a new widget in Cockpit, the piloting app for the Elios 3, which provides real-time radiation readings, cumulative dose tracking, and historical data visualization. Additionally, the live map now color-codes the drone’s path based on radiation levels, giving pilots immediate insight into potential hotspots. All flights with the radiation payload can be analyzed using Flyability’s Inspector software, which generates comprehensive reports. These reports display radiation data on a 3D map of the asset, showing the drone’s flight path, radiation levels along the route, and specific dose rates at key locations. "By combining the precision of the RDS-32 with the accessibility of the Elios 3, we've raised the bar for nuclear safety," said Loic Eloy, President of Mirion Technologies. "We're proud to support this innovation and continue our commitment to advancing radiation protection through cutting-edge technology." The integration was thoroughly tested at several nuclear sites across the U.S. and Europe. Radiological specialists and UAS managers used the system for tasks such as monitoring hydraulic leaks, assessing safe maintenance conditions, and evaluating the impact of equipment replacements on radiation levels. In addition, the Elios 3 underwent rigorous radiation resistance testing in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Idaho Environmental Coalition. The results confirmed its ability to operate in high-radiation environments, withstanding up to 10,000 R/h and a total accumulated dose of 4,000 R.
