Today in Highland Park

Here's a recent update from the Chicago Tribune:

The City of Highland Park and the Highland Park Fire Department are once again coming together to host a special Memorial Day blood drive. This year, the event is organized to support Kylia Abbott, the two-year-old daughter of firefighter Nathan Abbott, who is currently battling stage four neuroblastoma. The blood drive will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, at Fire Station #33, located at 1130 Central Ave., in Highland Park.

Kylia was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer that develops in nerve tissue, following a routine checkup in January 2014. Her condition has required aggressive treatment, including nearly 20 blood transfusions, all provided at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital. The family has been deeply touched by the outpouring of support from Nathan’s colleagues, many of whom have made personal sacrifices to be there for their friend and his family during this difficult time.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Highland Park Fire Department has organized a blood drive in honor of Kylia. Nathan, a former U.S. Marine who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded the Purple Heart, continues to inspire those around him through his strength and dedication.

For the firefighters, hosting the blood drive on Memorial Day is more than just an act of charity—it's a way to honor service, both military and community-based. "We're in the business of saving lives," said Highland Park Fire Chief Dan Pease. "This is our way of giving back to one of our own and helping a family in need."

Kylia’s grandmother shared how critical blood donations have been in her granddaughter’s journey. "The blood transfusions were essential in keeping Kylia strong enough to undergo her stem cell transplant," she explained. "They helped her stay alert and active, which played a big role in her fight against the disease."

If you're interested in donating blood, appointments are encouraged but not required. You can schedule your donation by calling LifeSource at (877) 543-3768 or visiting www.lifesource.org and using group code 344D.

Thanks, Dan.
