May 17, 2023 – Flyability, a leading provider of indoor drone solutions, has partnered with Mirion Technologies (NYSE: MIR), a global leader in radiation detection and safety, to launch a new radiation surveying payload for the Elios 3 drone. This innovative integration brings together the Mirion RDS-32™ radiation survey meter with Flyability’s Elios 3, an advanced indoor inspection drone. The result is a powerful tool that allows users to map environments while collecting real-time radiological data, which can then be visualized in a high-resolution 3D model of the asset being inspected. The Elios 3 now stands as the first commercially available drone capable of performing remote-controlled indoor radiation surveys and accurate localization. This advancement enables nuclear workers to gather critical data without entering hazardous or irradiated zones, significantly improving safety and operational efficiency. "This partnership between two industry leaders marks a major milestone in our mission to specialize the Elios 3 for key markets," said Patrick Thévoz, CEO of Flyability. "Field testing at nuclear facilities has shown that this solution will make a real difference in enhancing safety through robotics." The integration includes a new widget in Cockpit, the Elios 3’s control app, which provides live readings of radiation levels, cumulative dose, and measurement history. The upgraded live map now color-codes the drone's flight path based on radiation intensity, making it easier to identify high-risk areas during inspections. All flights with the radiation payload can be analyzed using Flyability’s Inspector software to generate detailed reports. These reports display radiation data on a 3D map, showing the drone’s trajectory, radiation levels along the path, and specific dose rates at points of interest. This makes data interpretation more intuitive and actionable. "Combining the precision of the RDS-32 with the accessibility of the Elios 3 has taken nuclear safety to a new level," said Loic Eloy, President of Mirion Technologies. "We are proud to collaborate with Flyability and continue our commitment to advancing radiation safety through innovation." The integration was tested extensively at multiple nuclear sites across the U.S. and Europe. Radiological specialists and UAS program managers used the system for various tasks, including monitoring hydraulic leaks, assessing safe maintenance conditions, and evaluating the impact of equipment replacements on radiation levels. In addition, the Elios 3 underwent rigorous radiation resistance testing in a project conducted with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Idaho Environmental Coalition. Results confirmed its ability to operate in high-radiation environments, withstanding up to 10,000 R/h and a total dose of 4,000 R.
