This is from Larry Shapiro: The Lake Zurich Fire Department was called just after 5 p.m. on Monday to respond to a fire at Midwest Motors, located at 540 Cortland Drive. Upon arrival, the first engine reported light smoke coming from the eaves of the building. As the smoke intensified, the alarm was quickly upgraded to a Box Alarm. The strip center housed a large indoor showroom filled with high-end and exotic used cars. The fire was located on the second floor and in the attic at the southern end of the sprinklered building. Fire companies managed to contain the blaze to that section, though there was significant water damage throughout the structure. While some vehicles were damaged, the majority were successfully removed before the fire spread further. Multiple departments responded to the scene, including engines from Lake Zurich (4 units), Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, and Barrington Countryside. Trucks arrived from Wauconda and Arlington Heights, while squads came from Long Grove and Deerfield. Ambulances were dispatched from Barrington, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Libertyville. Chief officers from Lake Zurich, Wauconda, Fox River Grove, Long Grove, and Buffalo Grove were also on-site. Photographs taken by Larry Shapiro capture the intensity of the situation. One image shows the D side of the building, while another highlights the Arlington Heights Tower 1 in action. Firefighters from Wauconda were seen using a master stream from their tower ladder to tackle the remaining flames. Another photo shows the Wauconda tower ladder positioned in front of the building, and a shot of firefighters working on the D side during overhaul. One of the most notable images features Deerfield firefighters helping to push a Viper out of the showroom, highlighting the effort to save valuable vehicles. Overhaul operations continued from the Arlington Heights tower ladder, and three of Lake Zurich’s four Pierce engines were seen on the scene. Both tower ladders were used for the overhaul process. A Palatine intern was seen receiving instructions on how to use a hand line, showing the presence of training and support among responding crews. A McLaren sports car, one of the expensive vehicles inside the building, was also captured in one of the photos. A video will be posted later. You can view the full gallery of images here.
