This is from Larry Shapiro:

The Lake Zurich Fire Department received a call just after 5 p.m. on Monday regarding a fire at Midwest Motors, located at 540 Cortland Drive. The first arriving engine reported light smoke coming from the eaves of the building. As the smoke became more intense, the alarm was quickly escalated to a Box Alarm. The strip center housed a large indoor showroom featuring high-end and exotic used cars.

The fire was initially reported on the second floor and in the attic at the southern end of the sprinklered building. Firefighters managed to contain the flames to that section, but water damage spread throughout the structure. Although some vehicles were damaged, most were successfully removed before the situation worsened.

Multiple fire departments responded to the scene, including engines from Lake Zurich (4 units), Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, and Barrington Countryside. Truck companies came from Wauconda and Arlington Heights, while squads arrived from Long Grove and Deerfield. Ambulances were dispatched from Barrington, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Libertyville. Chief officers from Lake Zurich, Wauconda, Fox River Grove, Long Grove, and Buffalo Grove also arrived on scene.

Several images captured the intensity of the operation. One photo shows the D side of the building, with firefighters working closely to control the blaze. Another image highlights the arrival of Arlington Heights Tower 1, which played a key role in the response. A third photo shows Wauconda firefighters using a master stream from their tower ladder to tackle the remaining fire. Another shot captures the tower ladder positioned in front of the building, providing critical access for the crews.

Additional photos show firefighters conducting overhaul operations on the D side of the building, as well as those working from the Arlington Heights tower ladder. At the A-D corner, where the fire originated, crews were seen actively working to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. A notable moment included Deerfield firefighters helping to push a Viper out of the showroom, highlighting the effort to save valuable vehicles.

Three of Lake Zurich’s four Pierce engines were on site, along with both tower ladders, which were used extensively during the overhaul phase. A Palatine intern was seen receiving hands-on training from an experienced firefighter, demonstrating the collaborative nature of the response. One of the high-value cars inside the building was a McLaren, a prime example of the expensive inventory that was at risk during the incident.

A video of the event will be posted later. You can view the full gallery of images here.
