As the Visual Effects Society gathered to celebrate its 21st Annual Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, anticipation filled the air. This prestigious event honors the most remarkable achievements in visual effects across films, TV shows, and other media. This year marked another milestone as the event took place just before February 15th, continuing its tradition of recognizing excellence.
The evening was particularly special when a group of talented students from the renowned Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg stepped onto the stage to accept the VES Student Award. Presented by Autodesk's Chief Marketing Officer, Dara Treseder, this accolade recognized their incredible work on the short film *"A Calling. From the Desert. To the Sea"*, directed by Murad Abu Eisheh. The team's submission included a comprehensive breakdown of the film's visual effects, which can be explored further [here](#).
The short film tells the poignant story of two young sisters who flee their difficult circumstances to embark on a perilous desert journey toward a brighter future. Along the way, the younger sister is tormented by a terrifying desert creature, symbolizing the inner demons they must overcome. Despite these challenges, the sisters manage to break free from the creature’s grasp and reach a shimmering horizon, symbolizing hope and resilience.
Guided by VFX Supervisor Mario Bertsch, a team of 30 artists worked tirelessly over two years to deliver 28 stunning visual effects shots. Among the key contributors were Lennard Fricke and Max Pollmann, who handled VFX production, along with Creature and Animation Lead Till Sander-Titgemeyer, Compositing Lead Lukas Löffler, and Rigging Technical Director Lukas Kapp. They collaborated closely with Bertsch, Fricke, and Pollmann, alongside Technical Director Pascal Schober, to craft the film’s breathtaking desert landscapes and lifelike creatures. Technologies such as Autodesk Maya, Arnold, ShotGrid, and RV were integral to bringing the vision to life.
Upon receiving the award, VFX Producer Lennard Frick expressed his excitement: "We're thrilled to have been recognized among such exceptional nominees. It’s an immense honor for our entire team, who poured countless hours into this project, as well as for Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, our esteemed institution."
Dara Treseder echoed these sentiments: "We’re inspired by this new generation of visual effects artists and proud to support their journey in shaping the future of our industry. Congratulations to all the nominees and the ‘A Calling. From the Desert. To the Sea’ team. Your work continues to inspire and challenge audiences worldwide."
The celebration didn’t end there. Attendees marveled not only at the winning film but also at the diverse array of digital artistry showcased by other nominees like *"Boom"* (Romain Augier, Charles Di Cicco, Gabriel Augerai, and Laurie Pereira De Figueiredo), *"Macula"* (Hady Abou Ghazale, Lothaire Rialhe, Marta Rodriguez-Noriega Nava, and Jules Machicot), and *"Maronii"* (Maxime Guitet, Dimitri Allonneau, Lucas Plata, and Ngoc Mai Nguyen).
