On the cusp of February 15th, the annual Visual Effects Society Awards kicked off its 21st edition in grand fashion at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. This prestigious event honors the most remarkable achievements in visual effects across films, television, and other forms of media. This year, the awards paid special attention to emerging talents through the "Outstanding Visual Effects in a Student Project" category, which has been proudly supported by Autodesk for the past 16 years. Among the standout projects was a captivating short film titled *“A Calling. From the Desert. To the Sea”*, directed by Murad Abu Eisheh. The talented team from the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg took center stage to accept the award on behalf of their exceptional work. This team of 30 artists, led by VFX Supervisor Mario Bertsch, spent two grueling years perfecting 28 visual effects shots that brought the film to life. Key contributors such as Creature and Animation Lead Till Sander-Titgemeyer, Compositing Lead Lukas Löffler, Rigging Technical Director Lukas Kapp, and VFX Producer Lennard Fricke collaborated closely with the team to deliver a seamless and breathtaking experience. The film tells the poignant story of two young sisters fleeing their dire circumstances to embark on a perilous journey across the desert in search of hope. Haunted by terrifying nightmares, the younger sister encounters a monstrous creature that embodies her inner fears. Emerging from her dreams, the ghoul wreaks havoc, crashing into desert cliffs to torment her. Yet, through sheer determination, the sisters manage to break free from this symbolic adversary, reaching a shimmering horizon that symbolizes their newfound freedom. This hauntingly beautiful narrative was made possible thanks to cutting-edge technology, including Autodesk Maya for animation and rigging, Arnold for rendering, ShotGrid for production management, and RV for shot review. Each tool played a crucial role in crafting the film's striking desert landscapes and lifelike creatures. Lennard Fricke, the VFX producer, expressed his excitement and pride upon receiving the award: "We're thrilled to be recognized among such incredible nominees. It's a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved." Similarly, Autodesk CMO Dara Treseder praised the young artists, stating, "We're inspired by this generation of visual effects creators and excited to watch them shape the future of the industry." The celebration didn't stop there. Other notable entries, such as *“Boom”* by Romain Augier, Charles Di Cicco, Gabriel Augerai, and Laurie Pereira De Figueiredo, *“Macula”* by Hady Abou Ghazale, Lothaire Rialhe, Marta Rodriguez-Noriega Nava, and Jules Machicot, and *“Maronii”* by Maxime Guitet, Dimitri Allonneau, Lucas Plata, and Ngoc Mai Nguyen, were also acknowledged for their creativity and innovation.
