A worker was trapped in a hole in the front yard of a home on Aspen Drive in Buffalo Grove late Monday afternoon, prompting an emergency response from local fire and police departments. The incident occurred during a sewer repair operation, when a ground collapse reportedly left one worker stuck in the excavation site. Upon arrival, firefighters found workers frantically digging to free their colleague. The situation was dire — initial reports indicated that the victim was unconscious and not breathing. As a result, the MABAS Division 1 Technical Rescue Team was activated, with crews from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods responding immediately. Additional technical rescue units were dispatched from surrounding areas, including Palatine, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Inverness, and Bartlett. A special request was also made for an Arlington Heights Public Works sewer vacuum unit, though it arrived too late to assist in the rescue. Despite the swift response, the worker did not survive. He was later transported from the scene by a Mundelein ambulance. Emergency personnel worked tirelessly to stabilize the area and ensure the safety of other workers at the site. The incident has raised concerns about trench safety and the risks involved in underground utility work. The community is mourning the loss of the worker, and local authorities are investigating the cause of the ground collapse.
