HJ3 Composite Technologies has been awarded a significant contract by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of its initiative to support innovative solutions for infrastructure challenges. This grant places HJ3 among 21 small businesses nationwide that are working on cutting-edge technologies to address environmental and structural issues.
Known for its advanced carbon fiber and glass fiber systems, HJ3 specializes in restoring aging infrastructure with high-strength materials. The company is now focused on developing an automated process to apply these materials to corroded water pipelines, significantly improving efficiency and reducing repair time.
Jim Butler, CEO and founder of HJ3, said, “This award is a big step forward for us. We're working on a system that can scale up our operations, making pipeline repairs faster and more cost-effective.†The new method is expected to boost productivity by five times compared to traditional techniques, allowing workers to cover 1,000 feet of pipeline at once instead of just 100.
The EPA’s investment aligns with growing concerns over aging infrastructure, especially after frequent pipeline failures have made headlines. With rising costs for emergency repairs, there's a strong need for efficient, long-lasting solutions. HJ3’s carbon fiber technology, already used in over 10,000 applications globally, offers a more sustainable and economical alternative to replacing concrete and steel structures.
Phase 1 of the project will use the initial $100,000 grant to finalize prototypes, with plans to complete this by October. If successful, the company expects to receive an additional $300,000 for Phase 2, which will focus on commercializing the product.
HJ3 is committed to transforming how infrastructure is maintained and repaired, ensuring safer, more resilient systems for the future. For more information or to get in touch, visit their website or call 1-877-303-0453.
