HJ3 Composite Technologies has been awarded a significant contract by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), joining 21 other small businesses nationwide in receiving funding to develop innovative solutions for pressing environmental challenges. According to Jared Blumenfeld, EPA's regional administrator for the Pacific Southwest, these grants are designed to support research that leads to sustainable and effective infrastructure improvements. HJ3, a leader in the design and installation of high-strength carbon fiber and glass fiber systems, is excited about this opportunity. The company specializes in restoring aging infrastructure, particularly in the water utility sector. Jim Butler, CEO and founder of HJ3, shared, "We're thrilled with this award and are actively working on scaling our technology for broader commercial use." The project focuses on developing an automated system to apply carbon fiber materials to corroded drinking water pipelines. This method promises to increase efficiency by five times compared to traditional techniques, significantly reducing labor time and costs. "Our goal is to make pipeline repairs faster, safer, and more cost-effective," Butler added. Pipeline failures have become a growing concern across the country, with frequent leaks and ruptures leading to costly emergency repairs. Traditional methods often require replacing entire sections of pipe, which can be both time-consuming and expensive. HJ3’s carbon fiber technology offers a durable and cost-efficient alternative, having been successfully used in over 10,000 applications globally. The company recently completed a successful pilot program, demonstrating the viability of their large-scale repair approach. Instead of fixing 100 feet of pipe at a time, HJ3 can now handle up to 1,000 feet in a single operation. This advancement marks a major step forward in making infrastructure maintenance more efficient and sustainable. The initial $100,000 grant will fund prototype development in Phase 1, expected to be completed by October. HJ3 is also seeking an additional $300,000 for Phase 2, which will focus on bringing the product to market. With continued innovation and support, HJ3 aims to revolutionize how infrastructure is maintained and repaired across the country.
