The 2024 Flyability User Conference, held in Switzerland, was an incredible success. Initially expecting around 150 attendees, the event sold out with a total of 180 participants! The Alpha-Palmiers Hotel in central Lausanne provided the perfect setting for this gathering, where the Flyability team and global Elios enthusiasts came together to share experiences and explore new possibilities. One of the most exciting moments of the conference was the official launch of the Elios 3’s new ultrasonic thickness (UT) payload. Co-founder and CEO Patrick Thévoz opened the session, followed by CTO Adrien Briod, who shared the story behind the development of this groundbreaking tool. The UT payload had been a long-term goal for Flyability since the Elios 2, but it was the modular design of the Elios 3 that made it possible. Developed over four years in collaboration with Cygnus Instruments—a leader in ultrasonic thickness measurements—the payload was met with great enthusiasm when it was demonstrated during the event. Stefano Zampieri, Flyability’s product manager for the UT payload, highlighted the extensive field testing—over 100 days—ensuring the product was ready for real-world applications. The payload features an articulated arm and a cleaning module, making it ideal for use in harsh environments. Industry experts like Malcolm Connolly, Courtland Penk, and Danny Landry also shared their insights as beta testers and advisors, discussing the potential impact of the UT payload across various sectors. The conference featured a wide range of inspiring speakers from around the world, including representatives from China, South Africa, the UK, and the USA. Topics ranged from AI-assisted data analysis in maritime inspections to the use of drones in proving return on investment for businesses. Presentations covered everything from infrastructure digitization to nuclear waste management, showcasing how the Elios 3 is transforming industries. A highlight of the networking evening was a dinner at Domaine de la Crausaz, a beautiful venue nestled in the vineyards near Lake Leman, a UNESCO site. Attendees enjoyed food, conversation, and even some impromptu musical performances. It was a night filled with camaraderie and excitement. Another key part of the event was the “Fishbowl” session, where six guest speakers presented unique and creative uses of the Elios drone. From emergency response after storm pipe bursts to stock volume measurements in cement plants, the variety of applications was impressive. One presentation, by Robert Heinecke of NIPV, had the audience laughing as he described using the Elios in firefighting—though the Flyability team quickly reminded everyone of the drone's limitations in extreme heat! Overall, the 2024 User Conference was a celebration of innovation, collaboration, and the power of the Elios 3. With over 30 countries represented and dozens of industries discussed, it was a testament to the growing impact of drone technology in complex environments. As Patrick Thévoz said, "It was invaluable to hear from users in the field and to see the excitement about the new payload." Flyability is already planning the next event and encourages everyone to stay tuned for future opportunities to connect and learn. Don’t miss the chance to see the Elios 3 UT payload in action near you soon.
