Chicago sells old firehouse

From firefighters to filmmakers — the city-owned firehouse at 5714 N. Ridge Ave., a landmark built in 1928 and known for its terra cotta detailing, is now on the verge of a new chapter. The building, which has stood empty since 2003 when the last firefighters moved out, will soon be taken over by the Andersonville-based nonprofit Chicago Filmmakers.

The city selected Chicago Filmmakers from a group of several arts and community organizations, believing that this unique space could serve as a valuable resource for both the neighborhood and the film community. If approved by the Chicago Plan Commission and City Council, the property will be sold for just $36,000 — a fraction of its market value — according to Chris Chang from the Department of Housing and Economic Development.

Despite the low purchase price, the organization plans to invest $600,000 in renovations to restore the aging structure. Brenda Webb, executive director of Chicago Filmmakers, called the opportunity "a dream" and expressed her excitement about bringing independent films and experimental programming to the area.

"We want this space to be more than just a theater — it should be a true community center," she said during a recent meeting with nearby residents. The renovated firehouse would host weekly screenings of independent films, documentaries, and other unique content not typically found at mainstream theaters. Additionally, the organization plans to partner with local schools and host two annual film festivals.

The project is expected to begin in the spring, with construction taking between eight months and a year once the sale is finalized. The building’s basement will be used for storage, while the first floor will be converted into a 99-seat screening room. The second floor will house film classes, and an elevator will be added for accessibility. A concession stand and restroom will also be installed near the main entrance, which will be located off an alley.

The current parking lot offers 15 spaces, and the design includes plans for future improvements. Alderman Harry Osterman (48th) confirmed that Chicago Filmmakers was one of two finalists, beating out a for-profit arts group that the city chose not to name.

Founded in 1973, the organization has been based at 5243 N. Clark St. for the past 17 years. Webb has long had her eye on the firehouse, though she admitted the basement was initially filled with water when she first toured the space.

Earlier this summer, an open house attracted interest from a variety of groups, including a brew pub, theater companies, and even a nursery school. Sue Morales, president of the local block club, said the plan aligns well with the neighborhood's needs and character.

This transformation marks a significant milestone for both the building and the community — turning a once-forgotten firehouse into a vibrant center for film and culture.
