Initial reports can be misleading:

At 4:06 PM, the Chicago Tribune released an updated report on the incident involving a Chicago firefighter who was shot by police. According to authorities, the off-duty firefighter was involved in a tense encounter at a CVS store in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood around 12:45 PM.

The man was seen holding a dark object in his hand and in a shooting stance when he was shot by officers. At first, it was reported that the object was a weapon, but later it was revealed to be his wallet. The firefighter was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition and was undergoing surgery. However, officials initially stated that he had died before later updating his status as stable.

According to Patrick Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police, the police had been alerted by the firefighter’s wife, who expressed concern about his mental state and mentioned he had a gun. The firefighter was on medical leave and had a history of depression, Camden said.

Officers were initially told the man might be at a pharmacy on 111th Street, but when they didn’t find him there, they went to the CVS on 103rd Street. There, they found him in the driver’s seat of his car, talking on the phone. When asked to show his hands and exit the vehicle, he made the sign of the cross, opened the door, and jumped out with his hands in what appeared to be a combat position, holding the dark object.

No weapon was found at the scene, but one was later discovered at his home. The firefighter is also a paramedic and lives just two miles away from the location of the shooting.

Earlier, at 2:27 PM, the Tribune had reported that the firefighter had been shot and killed after opening fire on responding officers. The initial version suggested he had fired at police following a call about a man threatening suicide. However, the updated account clarified the sequence of events and corrected earlier inaccuracies.

This case highlights how quickly information can change in real-time news coverage, especially in high-stakes situations where facts are still being gathered and verified.
