This morning (December 26, 2017), just before noon, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods (LRFPD) firefighters along with their neighbors from surrounding departments were dispatched to 1505 Garden Court, located in unincorporated Lake County, due to reports of a house fire. As they approached the scene, those responding noticed a plume of smoke visible high in the sky well before they arrived. Upon arrival, LRFPD Battalion 51 discovered significant flames erupting from both the garage and the attic area. This prompted them to request an upgrade to a working fire status.
The situation seemed urgent as it appeared the house might have been unoccupied at the time of the blaze, and there were indications that renovations were underway. Unfortunately, the nearest hydrant was found to be non-functional. To address this challenge, while LRFPD Squad 51 worked on setting up their equipment, Buffalo Grove Engine 26 brought a large hose from the end of the block to ensure a continuous water supply. Wheeling Tower 24 positioned itself in front of the house to assist in managing the situation.
Photographs taken by Dan McInerney and Larry Shapiro captured the intensity of the fire, showing heavy smoke billowing from the structure and flames engulfing parts of the building. An interior team managed to control the fire on the second floor and in the attic, while another line focused on tackling the blaze in the garage. The incident escalated quickly, prompting an upgrade to a MABAS Box Alarm, which brought additional resources to the scene.
A partial list of the responding units included LRFPD’s Battalion 51, Squad 51, Ambulance 51, Battalion 52, Ambulance 52, Engine 53, and several support vehicles. From Wheeling came Tower 24, Engine 42, Ambulance 24, Battalion 24, and 2401. Buffalo Grove contributed Engine 26 and Ambulance 26, while Mt. Prospect sent Ambulance 14. Northbrook Engine 10 also joined the effort, alongside Prospect Heights Tower 9 and Des Plaines Engine 61. Highland Park Engine 34 was present, as well as Deerfield-Bannockburn Squad 19 and 2001. Gurnee Squad 1352 and Wauconda Tower 341 also responded, along with chiefs from Libertyville and Countryside.
Additional images from the scene showed the winter conditions adding complexity to firefighting efforts. One picture highlighted the inoperable hydrant, while others depicted the intense smoke and flames consuming the home. Northbrook FD Engine 10 was also seen assisting at the site.
Despite the challenges, firefighters managed to bring the fire under control. The community rallied together, with numerous departments providing mutual aid.
