Just after noon today (December 26, 2017), firefighters from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods (LRFPD) and nearby departments responded to a structure fire at 1505 Garden Court in unincorporated Lake County. As they approached the scene, crews noticed an ominous plume of smoke high in the sky well before reaching the address. Upon arrival, LRFPD's Battalion 51 discovered significant flames erupting from both the garage and attic areas. The decision was quickly made to escalate the response to a working fire status.
The initial challenge came when it was discovered that the closest hydrant was non-functional. To maintain water pressure, Buffalo Grove Engine 26 deployed a large hose line from the end of the street to ensure a continuous water supply. Meanwhile, Wheeling Tower 24 took up position in front of the residence, ready to support the operation.
Photos captured by Dan McInerney and Larry Shapiro show heavy smoke billowing from the building and firefighters working diligently to control the blaze. It seemed likely that the house might have been vacant at the time of the fire, with signs indicating recent renovations underway.
Despite the challenges posed by the inoperable hydrant, crews managed to suppress the flames effectively. An interior attack successfully knocked down the fire on the second floor and in the attic, while other teams focused on containing the fire spreading from the garage. The incident commander upgraded the response to a MABAS Box Alarm, bringing additional resources to the scene.
Among the various departments contributing to the effort were units from LRFPD, including Battalion 51, Squad 51, Ambulance 51, and multiple engines. Supporting departments such as Wheeling, Buffalo Grove, Mt. Prospect, Northbrook, Prospect Heights, Des Plaines, Highland Park, Deerfield-Bannockburn, and others also played critical roles. Additionally, chief officers from Libertyville and Countryside were present to oversee the operation.
Throughout the response, firefighters faced not only the intense heat and smoke but also the logistical hurdles presented by the malfunctioning hydrant. Their teamwork and resourcefulness were evident in how swiftly they adapted to these challenges. Photos provided by Larry Shapiro further illustrate the scale of the operation, showing the dramatic firefighting efforts underway.
As of this report, the fire appears to be under control, though full details regarding its origin and extent are still being determined. For more visual coverage, visit Shapirophotography.net for additional images taken during the event.
