Today in Highland Park

Here's a special update from the Chicago Tribune:

The City of Highland Park and the Highland Park Fire Department are coming together once again for a Memorial Day blood drive, this time to support Kylia Abbott, the young daughter of firefighter Nathan Abbott, as she continues her battle against a rare form of cancer. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, at Fire Station #33, located at 1130 Central Ave., in Highland Park.

Kylia was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma following a routine checkup in January 2014. This rare type of cancer develops in nerve tissue, often in the adrenal glands, neck, chest, or spinal cord. Her treatment at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital has been intense, requiring nearly 20 blood transfusions over the years.

The Abbott family has received incredible support from Nathan’s colleagues, many of whom have stepped up by adjusting their schedules to be there for Kylia during her treatments. It’s a testament to the strong bonds within the fire department and the community.

This is the second year that the Highland Park Fire Department has organized a blood drive in honor of Kylia. Nathan, a former U.S. Marine who earned the Purple Heart during Operation Iraqi Freedom, has always been known for his dedication—not just to his job, but to his family as well.

For the firefighters, holding this blood drive on Memorial Day is more than just an act of service—it’s a meaningful way to honor a fellow firefighter’s family on a day that symbolizes sacrifice and remembrance.

"We're in the business of saving lives," said Fire Chief Dan Pease. "It’s part of our mission, and now we’re extending that mission to help a brother and his family in their time of need."

Kylia’s grandmother shared how critical blood donations have been throughout her granddaughter’s journey. “The blood transfusions were essential in keeping Kylia strong while she waited for her stem cell transplant. They helped her stay alert and gave her the strength to fight,” she said.

If you're interested in donating blood, appointments are recommended, but walk-ins are welcome. You can schedule your donation by calling LifeSource at (877) 543-3768 or visiting www.lifesource.org and using group code 344D.

Thanks, Dan
