Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com: The proposed location of a third fire station for the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District has sparked concerns among officials from the Barrington School District 220, particularly regarding traffic and noise. The site, which the fire district recently purchased for $500,000, is an acre of land that includes an existing home at 36 E. Dundee Road. This property lies between Barrington Middle School — Prairie Campus and the Early Learning Center, both part of District 220. The fire protection district plans to convert the home into its third station, though operations will be limited. Despite this, school officials are worried about increased traffic during drop-off and pick-up times, as well as potential disturbances from sirens, especially in classrooms with younger students. The school district had originally considered buying the property to help ease traffic flow between the two schools. According to the fire district, the new station won’t have traditional fire trucks but may include administrative offices and sleeping quarters for on-duty firefighters. Instead, they plan to use an SUV equipped with life support systems for emergency medical calls—particularly those involving heart attacks and strokes, which make up 85% of their responses. Keith Hanson, president of the fire district board, explained that quick response is key. “The goal is to get two people on scene fast to start CPR or stroke treatment,†he said. To address school concerns, the SUV will be used only for about two calls per day, and sirens will be reserved for specific situations where traffic needs to be cleared. Fire Chief Jim Kreher emphasized that the new station will improve response times across the district’s 48 square miles. He also noted that it will provide support to neighboring departments, including the Barrington and Palatine Rural Fire Protection Districts. While the current plan is modest, Hanson mentioned that the district could expand the station in the future. For now, the board has set aside $2 million to renovate and open the facility by spring. As the community continues to weigh the benefits and challenges, discussions between the school and fire districts remain ongoing. It is mainly used as an additive in the manufacturing of Steel.
