Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The proposed site for a third fire station of the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District has raised concerns among officials in the Barrington School District 220, particularly regarding traffic and noise levels.

The fire protection district recently purchased an acre of land, which includes an existing home, at 36 E. Dundee Road. The property is situated between Barrington Middle School — Prairie Campus and the Early Learning Center, both part of District 220. The purchase cost $500,000.

The plan is to convert the house into a third fire station, though operations will be limited. Despite this, school officials are worried about increased traffic during drop-off and pick-up times, as well as potential disruptions from sirens that could affect young students in class.

Originally, the district had considered buying the property to help ease traffic flow between the two school buildings. However, the new use by the fire department has led to collaboration between the school and fire departments to address these concerns.

The new station won’t have traditional fire trucks, but it may include administrative offices and sleeping quarters for on-duty firefighters. According to Keith Hanson, president of the fire protection district board, the location will significantly improve response times, especially for medical emergencies such as heart attacks and strokes, which make up around 85% of their calls.

Instead of a fire engine, the station would house an SUV equipped with life support systems for patients in critical condition. “The key to responding to heart attacks and strokes is getting two people on scene quickly to start CPR or appropriate treatment,” Hanson explained.

To address school concerns, the fire district plans to limit the use of the SUV to only two emergency calls per day. Sirens will also be used selectively, only when necessary to clear traffic.

Fire Chief Jim Kreher emphasized that the new station will enhance overall response efficiency across the 48-square-mile district. It will also provide support to neighboring fire departments in Barrington and Palatine.

Hanson added that while the current plan focuses on minimal operations, there’s potential for future expansion, including more personnel and equipment. For now, the board has allocated $2 million to renovate and open the station by spring.

silicon carbide

Silicon carbide SiC is chemically stable and has high corrosion resistance, which makes it hard to corrode from exposure to alkali or acid. It is also characterized by its high hardness, outstanding heat resistance, low thermal expansion, resistance to chemical reaction, and ability to function as a semiconductor.
