The ZJ Mechanical Booster Pump, also known as a Roots pump, is a volumetric pump that operates efficiently under high pumping speeds and low suction pressures. It consists of two identical rotors with an 8-figure shape and a certain clearance between them within the pump housing. These rotors rotate at the same speed in opposite directions to perform the function of gas suction and discharge. The rotors are supported by rolling bearings in the end covers of the pump and are kept at a fixed relative position using timing gears. The end clearance between the rotors and the end covers is adjusted using metal shims, allowing for one-direction expansion of the rotor when temperature increases during operation. Four sets of inner seals (also known as piston rings) prevent lubricating oil from entering the pump housing, while the shaft seal on the front-end cover prevents air leakage into the pump housing. To reduce pump temperature, all models except the two smallest ones are equipped with a gearbox cooler and a front-end cover cooler. Power is transmitted through a coupling or V-belt from the motor to the driving shaft of the pump, and then through synchronizing gears to the driven shaft.

The main advantage of the Roots vacuum pump is its ability to operate with high pumping speed under lower suction pressures, but it must be backed by a backing pump. Under normal working conditions, it is permissible not to add bypass pipes. Roots vacuum pumps should not operate with a higher pressure difference than allowable, otherwise overheating and overload will cause damage to the Roots vacuum pump. Therefore, proper backing pumps and necessary protection devices must be considered. Oil-sealed mechanical pumps are usually selected as the fore-vacuum pump. Other types of backing pumps may be used where their requirement for ultimate vacuum is not too strict. Particularly, when the gas pumped contains a large amount of vapor, a water-ring vacuum pump may be an ideal option, although the ultimate vacuum achieved is on the low side.
