Last night, the North Chicago Fire Department responded to a fire at a commercial auto-body facility. Upon arrival, they found heavy fire in a one-story building with exposures on both sides. The incident was escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm, bringing in mutual aid companies from surrounding areas. Soon after, the original structure collapsed as the fire spread to the adjacent buildings. A firefighter is seen cutting through a metal fence to gain access to the rear of the scene. Shaun Unell captured the moment. Another image shows flames burning through the rear of the original building after the roof collapsed. The North Chicago tower ladder was actively engaged, directing a master stream toward the southern exposure building. Several special calls were made, significantly increasing the number of units on the scene. Despite being classified as a second alarm, the actual number of responding companies made it more like a large-scale operation. Firefighters were seen moving hoses to make way for the Round Lake Tower Ladder as it positioned itself on Sheridan Road. Knollwood Engine 44 had lines off in the rear, while heavy smoke escaped from a vacant apartment building as firefighters redeployed North Chicago Tower 9. Engines came from North Chicago, Waukegan, Newport Township, Knollwood, Abbott Labs, and Lake Forest. Additional units arrived from the Great Lakes Naval Base, Winthrop Harbor, Lake Villa, and a second unit from Newport Township. Five elevated master streams were in operation, including tower ladders from North Chicago, Round Lake, Highland Park, Zion, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods. Although Grayslake and Arlington Heights units were on standby, Arlington Heights made the longest journey—32 miles. Highland Park Truck 33 was stationed behind the fire buildings on Lenox Street. A Newport Township hose tender, a 1977 Mack CF, supplied water to Highland Park. Lincolnshire Truck 53 operated as a master stream for the first time. Lake Bluff, Gurnee, and Deerfield sent squads, while chief officers from Waukegan, Newport Township, Wauconda, and Lake Forest arrived. Two North Chicago ambulances and medic units from Libertyville and the Antioch Rescue Squad were also present. The Round Lake tower ladder set up in front of the southern exposure building. A two-story brick apartment building to the south posed challenges due to its unsafe condition, but eventually, the fire broke through the roof, allowing elevated streams to extinguish the flames. Waukegan Engine 1611 was pumping from a hydrant at Sheridan Road and 10th Street. Abbott Labs' fire department provided critical support by supplying water from their property reservoir, enabling more effective defensive operations. Their engine was seen pumping from across the street. Zion’s truck was seen wetting down the remains of the apartment building, alongside the Round Lake and North Chicago towers. No injuries were reported, and the alarm was called off late in the evening. Units were released after midnight, and an excavator was brought in to remove the remains of an unsafe building. Shaun Unell and Larry Shapiro were on the scene and submitted these photos. More images can be viewed [here]. A video will be available soon.
