The Libertyville Fire Department responded to a reported fire at the Jamaican Gardens North, located at 14595 W. Rockland Road (Route 176). Upon arrival, first-responding units encountered heavy smoke that significantly reduced visibility along Route 176. A substantial fire was already burning on the eastern side of the property, near what used to be the retail store entrance. Firefighters initiated an attack, and the incident was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm. The business had been closed to the public for several years and was reportedly unoccupied. Libertyville Tower 461 and Engine 463 were positioned on the eastern side of the site. However, the fire spread rapidly to additional structures on the western side, where access was limited. Lake Forest Tower Ladder 421 was stationed on the northern driveway, while Countryside Engine 412 was deployed at the northwest corner. As the fire intensified, the alarm was escalated to a second alarm, bringing more units to the scene. A special request was made for the Division 1 Mobile Unit (MVU) from Wheeling, but the unit was not dispatched and was later released before the box alarm was called off. Two tower ladders were used to deploy master streams, alongside multiple hand lines and two multi-versals. In addition to Libertyville Engine 463 and Countryside Engine 412, Lake Bluff Engine 517 and Knollwood Engine 44 also provided water supply. The fire was eventually knocked down after approximately three hours. Several other fire departments contributed to the response, including Mundelein, North Chicago, and Lake Zurich with ambulances; Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Gurnee with rescue squads; Highland Park with a ladder truck; and Waukegan, Deerfield, and Newport Township with engine companies. Chief officers from Countryside, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Bluff, and Lake Forest were also on-site. Tim Olk, Jeff Rudolph, and Larry Shapiro were present at the scene. This is the first in a three-part series covering this significant fire event.
