This report comes from Eric Haak: Engine 126 arrived at 7733 S. South Shore Drive just before 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon and found a fire on the third floor of a five-story apartment building. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze within 10 minutes, as it had begun to spread to the unit above the original fire location. Residents on the fourth floor were heard calling for help, adding urgency to the situation. Fire crews exited through the basement garage and also via a window on the third floor of the front of the building. A dog was rescued from the fire floor and taken to the ground, where emergency responders performed chest compressions and administered oxygen in an attempt to revive it. Unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful. One resident was taken to the hospital with minor smoke inhalation from an adjacent apartment. Locals later reported that there were no working smoke detectors on the floor where the fire started, raising concerns about fire safety in the building.
