A large, 150-year-old barn in Leaf River was completely consumed by fire around 3 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015. The blaze, which quickly spread and left the structure in ruins, was one of the most significant fires the area had seen in years. Despite high winds, icy conditions, and deep slush from a recent winter storm, firefighters from 10 different departments worked tirelessly to contain the flames and prevent further damage. According to Leaf River Fire Chief Steve Shelton, no injuries were reported—neither people nor animals were harmed. However, the cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Tuesday. The barn, located at the southeast corner of State Route 72 and Main Street, had been used for storing hay, feed, and farming equipment. It was built in 1844 and had been owned by Nancy Stukenberg’s family for generations. Stukenberg shared that her three horses, typically kept inside the barn, were in a nearby feedlot when the fire broke out and were unharmed. “Everything else can be replaced,” she said, though the emotional impact of losing such a historic structure was evident. Firefighters managed to save several nearby buildings, including two homes, thanks to their coordinated efforts. The response involved mutual aid from various departments, including units from Byron, Win-Ber-Sew RIT, Stillman Valley, German Valley, Mount Morris, Forreston, Oregon, and Polo. The effort included engines, trucks, ambulances, tenders, and emergency personnel from across the region. The fire served as a reminder of the challenges faced during severe weather and the importance of quick, unified action in emergencies. Local residents expressed gratitude for the firefighters' work and hope for a full investigation into the cause of the devastating blaze.
